Why tenants buy their own policy
Your belongings
Fire, smoke, theft, and many kinds of water damage can wipe out furniture, clothing, and electronics in an afternoon. Your landlord's policy is written for the building, not your things.
Your liability
If a guest is hurt in your unit or a kitchen fire spreads next door, you could be held responsible. Renters liability helps pay damages and legal defense.
Your place to stay
When a covered loss makes your rental unlivable, additional living expenses can help with a hotel, meals, and other extra costs while repairs are made.

Common questions
Is tenant insurance the same as renters insurance?
Yes. Tenant insurance, renters insurance, and HO-4 are different names for the same type of policy for people who rent their home.
Doesn't my landlord's insurance cover my things?
Usually not. A landlord's policy typically covers the building and the landlord's own liability, not your belongings or your personal liability.
How much does tenant insurance cost?
Price depends on location, coverage limits, deductible, building type, claims history, and other factors. Many renters find a policy costs less per month than a streaming subscription or two, but your quote is what counts.
Where can I request a quote?
This site has state and city pages for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arkansas, Arizona, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Indiana.
Is a quote the same as coverage?
No. A quote is not a binder. Coverage begins only when an insurer confirms it in writing on the terms of the policy it issues.
Does tenant insurance cover flood?
Standard renters policies exclude flood. Flood coverage for contents is available separately, including through the National Flood Insurance Program in participating communities.
